Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Programs
What is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program? CSA programs are hosted by local farms that invite members to buy a weekly "share" of food produced during the growing season. One generally gets a box with a variety of fruits and vegetables that reflect the locality and the season. It is not only part of the “buy local” movement, which allows consumers to have fresher, more wholesome foods, but also is likely to be much more cost effective, as much produce from a market that has been hauled for days, if not weeks, to arrive at it’s destination. The decision to buy local is not only about pleasing the palate or contributing to a cleaner environment. It also supports the local economy by putting dollars directly back into it. Below are some CSA resources for the Silicon Valley.
TWO SMALL FARMS
Two Small Farms is the cooperative effort by THE Mariquita Farm and of High Ground Organics. Both farms found themselves "Too Small" to effectively compete in the roller derby match that is the modern model for organic produce retail, so they joined forces in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that serves the Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas.
“When you join a CSA program, you receive a weekly box of organic vegetables and fruit delivered straight from our farms to a pick up site near you. We have four week trials available for new members, or you can sign up for longer periods as well. The cost averages to $20 per week.” For further information, go to their website, www.twosmallfarms.com or give them a call at 831-786-0625.
LOCAL HARVEST
LocalHarvest maintains a definitive and reliable "living" public nationwide directory of small farms, farmers markets, and other local food sources. Their online search engine helps people find products from family farms, local sources of sustainably grown food, and encourages people to establish direct contact with small farms in their local area. Their online store helps small farms develop markets for some of their products beyond their local area. Click here to go to their website.
FULL BELLY FARM
Full Belly has been farmed using organic practices since 1984 and is certified by California Certified Organic Farmers. The farm produces an amazing diversity of vegetables, herbs, nuts, flowers, and fruits year-round. Full Belly Farm operates a Community-Supported Agricultural project or CSA. LIVE EARTH FARM
Live Earth Farm is a small family farm where our commitment is to grow the most delicious, beautiful, high quality organic fruit and vegetables the earth is able to offer. We've always farmed organically. Organic, for us, does not mean simply refraining from the use of synthetic chemicals. We treat our farm as a living organism, and believe in developing a deeper connection with the earth, the community, and environment around us. One of the most rewarding and satistifying aspects of farming is getting to know the people who eat the wonderful food we grow. From the very beginning, the heart of our operation focused on developing a Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA). To get more information, please click here to go to our website.
